Italian cyclist Ivan Basso suspended by Discovery Channel
Italian racing cyclist Ivan Basso has been suspended by his Discovery Channel team following the reopening of the Italian Olympic Committee investigation into the Spanish "Operation Puerto" doping scandal.
And Ivan Basso, who had signed a two-year contract with Discovery last November, had been already banned from last year's Tour de France after being named as one of the people involved in the drugs scandal, although all charges against him were subsequently dropped.
Ivan Basso is now required to attend a hearing on 2 May on charges of using a banned substance or method.
Ivan Basso was among 50 riders in last year's Operation Puerto and his name had been linked to a Spanish doctor accused of running a blood doping clinic in Madrid.
Although, back in October 2006, the Italian Olympic Committee and the Italian Cycling Federation cleared his name of involvement, a Discovery Channel statement said Ivan Basso had been suspended "pending further information in a new investigation coming out of Italy".
