Italian cyclist Ivan Basso banned for 2 years
Italian racing cyclist Ivan Basso has received a two-year ban at an Italian cycling federation hearing.
Ivan Basso, 29, had admitted his involvement in the Spanish blood-doping scandal known as Operation Puerto but asked for leniency in the sentencing.
Ivan Basso agreed he was guilty in principle of "attempted doping" but claimed he hadn't actually gone through with the action. Although he gave a blood sample to Eufemiano Fuentes, the doctor who masterminded it all, with the intention of doping he never actually carried it any further.
However, the Italian cycling federation decided to impose the maximum two years ban, as requested by the International Cycling Union.
Ivan Basso said: "I accept the sentence. I knew the situation wasn't an easy one. I'm going to continue to train and plan to return in 2009. I've got to look to the future."
Ivan Basso had also stood accused of using or attempting to use a banned substance or method, and of being in "possession of banned substances and methods."
