Italian cyclist Danilo Di Luca gets 3-month ban for doping
Italian racing cyclist and Giro d'Italia winner Danilo Di Luca has been given a three-month ban for drugs offences after a hearing of the Italian Olympic Committee (Coni).
Coni actually recommended a four-month ban for Danilo Di Luca, 31, for his involvement with doctor Carlo Santuccione, who served a five-year ban from 1995-2000 for providing athletes with doping products in what became commony referred to as the "Oil for Drugs" case.
However, Danilo Di Luca protested his innocence and said: "It's an injustice. I'm absolutely convinced of my innocence."
The ban means that Danilo Di Luca will not be in the last race of the season, which will be Saturday's Giro di Lombardia in northern Italy.
Danilo Di Luca also had to withdraw from the road cycling world championships in Stuttgart just three days before they began in September, after Coni's anti-doping chief Ettore Torri charged him with the doping offence.
