German rider Erik Zabel banned from world championships
Veteran German racing cyclist Erik Zabel has been told he will not be welcome to compete next month in the world championships.
This followed Erik Zabel's recent admission that he had used the banned blood booster EPO (erythropoietin) for a brief while back in 1996.
Organising committee president Susanne Eisenmann explained: "To allow certain riders in would not be in line with our commitment to clean cycling."
Susanne Eisenmann added: "It wouldn't be going in the direction that we have chosen."
A disappointed Erik Zabel said on Monday that his main goal this season was the world championships, which take place in Stuttgart from 26-30 September.
The German Cycling Federation (BDR) will be announcing the team selected on 29 August.
This year's world championship will have a strict anti-doping test programme drawn up in line with the guidelines of the German anti-doping agency and the world anti-doping agency.
