German cyclist Jan Ullrich glad the doping case has been dropped
German racing cyclist Jan Ullrich has said how glad he feels now that an investigation into alleged doping has been abandoned by the prosecutors in Bonn.
Jan Ullrich donated a very large sum of money to a charity and to the State to have the case dropped after it had been going on for 21 months.
Jan Ullrich, 34, said: "I am very happy that the accusations are off the table. It was harder to overcome than any Tour - at least there I could face and fight my rivals directly on a bike."
Jan Ullrich announced his retirement in February of last year, but he had been pulled out just before the 2006 Tour de France after he had been named in the Spanish doping probe, Operation Puerto.
A fraud case had been made against Jan Ullrich and it was being said that he deceived the public, his sponsors and his T-Mobile team, but Jan Ullrich has always maintained that he has done nothing wrong.
Jan Ullrich said he hadn't bought his liberty with the payments he made and he stressed: "I have not bought my freedom. The decision I have taken serves to protect my family.
