German cyclist Fabian Wegmann wins Tour de France warm-up
German cyclist Fabian Wegmann has won the first stage of the Dauphine Libere Tour de France warm-up race from Annecy to Bourgoin-Jallieu and he clocked a time of five hours, five minutes and 36 seconds for the 207km stage after breaking away with 15km to go.
Fabian Wegmann, who is a former winner of the King of the Mountains in the Giro d'Italia, edged out French cyclist Thomas Voeckler and Spanish rider Egoi Martinez on the line.
Britain's Bradley Wiggins finished in the main pack 13 seconds back.
Due to time bonuses, Fabian Wegmann is now in the overall lead with Egoi Martinez second, five seconds back on the same time as the former leader and prologue winner, American rider Dave Zabriskie.
"I am quite surprised we managed to keep the sprinters at bay," said Fabian Wegmann.
"It was a tough stage to do. I haven't raced for five weeks, so this is a good sign for the Tour de France," Fabian Wegmann added.
