German cyclist Erik Zabel still riding for Team Milram
German cyclist Erik Zabel will still be able to ride for Team Milram until 2008 although he admitted using the banned blood-booster EPO (erythropoietin) in 1996.
Erik Zabel confessed his guilt last Thursday that he had been taking the prohibited drug while he was riding for team Telekom, however, after a meeting, Team Milram have decided to honour his contract with them.
Team Milram manager Gianluigi Stanga said: "The decision wasn't easy. We take the ProTour Teams' code very seriously, but Zabel's offence dates back 11 years."
Erik Zabel now has to see if the German Cycling Federation (BDR) will still let him take part in September's UCI Road World Championships in Stuttgart.
The BDR has said in the recent past that even cyclists, who are only suspected of using drugs, let alone those who have admitted their guilt, cannot take part in major championships.
