German company Gerolsteiner won't sponsor cycling team
The German Gerolsteiner Brunnen mineral water company will not be continuing their sponsorship contract with the cycling team after the current contract expires at the end of 2008, it has been reported.
German Gerolsteiner road bicycle racing team has been sponsored by the mineral water company Gerolsteiner Brunnen and by Specialized.
But Gerolsteiner could even pull out sooner and by the end of this year if a new sponsor is found to replace them.
Gerolsteiner explained their decision in this way: "The recent doping incidents are not the reason for the decision,"
"They did, however, contribute to the temporary devaluation of cycling as a communications platform."
Gerolsteiner had sponsored the cycling team since 1998 but they had been very clear that they were opposed to doping in sport and "It was not entirely unexpected," said team boss Hans-Michael Holczer.
