German Stefan Schumacher leads in the Giro d'Italia
Winning the third stage from Perwez to Namur has helped rider Stefan Schumacher take the overall lead in the Giro d'Italia.
Stefan Schumacher beat Jose Luis Rubiera and teammate Davide Rebellin on the final climb into Namur and the 20-second time bonus awarded to stage winners was enough for the German to overhaul the current champion Paolo Savoldelli in the race standings.
Tuesday's stage is the last in Belgium, a 193-km ride from Wanze to Hotton, before the Giro d'Italia moves to Italy.
The stage favourite Italian Olympic champion Paolo Bettini finished fourth in the same group as the leaders, along with the then reigning leader Paolo Savoldelli.
But Stefan Schumacher now leads Paolo Savoldelli by 13 seconds and teammate Davide Rebellin by 23 in the overall standings.
And on a day, which was not good for the sprinters and had to be ridden under heavy rain Italian ace Alessandro Petacchi had a nasty fall and had to have treatment on his left knee.
