French cyclist Cyril Dessel takes Tour de France overall lead French rider Cyril Dessel claimed the overall lead in the Tour de France when he came in second to Spanish cyclist Juan Miguel Mercado on Wednesday's stage 10.
Juan Miguel Mercado just beat Cyril Dessel in a sprint finish in the first Pyrenean mountain stage to take his second Tour stage win, after a previous triumph in 2003.
Juan Miguel Mercado went up to second overall position behind Cyril Dessel, who also took the polka dot jersey for the King of the Mountains and previous yellow jersey holder Serhiy Honchar fell to third overall.
Cyril Dessel, of AG2R-Prevoyance, started the day in 28th place overall, 3:50 adrift of the Ukrainian before the 190.5km from Cambo-les-Bains to Pau.
Cyril Dressel became the first French rider to don the yellow jersey since Thomas Voeckler back in 2004.
"I can be satisfied with my day even if I didn't win the stage", Cyril Dressel said.
"I didn't want to let Mercado win because a stage win in the Tour is something rare. If I had won the stage it would have been a perfect day," Cyril Dressel added.
