Former world champion cyclist Mario Cipollini returns to sport
Former world champion cyclist Mario Cipollini has decided to make a comeback to the sport at the age of 40, and he has signed a deal to race for American team Rock & Republic.
Italian cyclist Mario Cipollini has been reported as being scheduled to take part in the Tour of California next month.
Mario Cipollini, who announced his retirement in 2005, had won the elite men's road race at the 2002 World Championships, and he claimed a record 42 stage wins in the Giro d'Italia with another 12 stage victories in the Tour de France.
Mario Cipollini's first professional cycling victory arrived in 1989, and his last in 2005 - in all Mario Cipollini has claimed a total of 191 wins.
Mario Cipollini, whose nickname is Il Re Leone or The Lion King, is known for his flamboyant nature and in his last appearance he wore a special pink jersey listing the towns where he claimed each of his 189 career wins.
Mario Cipollini had a lot of problems stemming from injuries in his last year of competition and he was disappointed at the time at not being able to take part in one final Giro.
