Former Tour de France winner Eddy Merckx won't testify
Former five-time Tour de France winner and racing commentator Eddy Merckx will not testify at cyclist Floyd Landis' doping trial and said: "I do not want to be mixed up in this. I have nothing to say and will not testify."
Floyd Landis, 31, won last year's Tour de France race but could get a two-year suspension if found guilty of using the banned hormone testosterone at a US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) hearing in California.
Eddy Merckx, 61, added by way of an explanation as to why he won't get involved: "I know nothing about this business and I therefore don't see in what way I can help clarify things."
He has been called upon to testify because Eddy Merckx's son Axel is a former team-mate of Floyd Landis and Eddy Merckx was an advisor to their Phonak Team.
Floyd Landis' spokesman Michael Henson said: "He's a standby witness. We may not use him if we don't discuss tactics," adding: "Right now, the focus is on science."
Floyd Landis had tested positive for high levels of testosterone after winning last year's Tour but he has denied using dope all through the case.
