Dutch cyclist Marianne Vos beats Nicole Cooke
Dutch cyclist Marianne Vos has beaten Welsh rider Nicole Cooke who now will miss out on a third World Cup title after the final race of the season was run on Sunday.
Marianne Vos, 20, won the final sprint of the Rund um die Nürnberger Altstadt in Germany and Nicole Cooke, 24, was struggling due to an injured knee. Marianne Vos, who rides for Team DSB Bank, finished 70 points ahead of Nicole Cooke.
Raleigh rider Nicole Cooke had led Marianne Vos by 80 points before the race and would have won the title had she finished second or third, however, due to her injury problem she dropped to 34th place in the sprint.
Nicole Cooke had been informed last week that she needed an operation on her knee but she had decided to postpone the surgery.
"I didn't want to gift this to Vos without a fight," Nicole Cooke is reported to have said, and she added: "It was a terrific ride by her, the pressure was on and she came up with the goods."
