Cyclists Erik Zabel and Rolf Adag admit to EPO doping

zabel Racing cyclist Erik Zabel and former team-mate Rolf Aldag have both confessed their guilt in using the banned substance EPO whilst riding as contestants for Telekom in the mid-1990s. Erik Zabel and Rolf Aldag admitted their doping offenses live on German TV.

German racing bicycle rider Erik Zabel, who had topped the points classification in the Tour de France six times, said: "I took EPO in 1996 but I stopped after a week because of secondary effects," and he added: "It was my only experience with doping in my whole career."

Erik Zabel was also won a silver medal in the 2006 World Championships.

Former Telekom men Udo Boelts, Bert Dietz and Christian Henn also admitted their offences earlier on this week.

Rolf Aldag, who is now sporting director of the Telekom team, although this is now known as T-Mobile, admitted using banned substances between 1995 and 2002.

Rolf Adag had carried on with the practice and he said: "Before the (Tour de France) in 1995 I began using EPO and continued using it."
