Cyclist Jan Ullrich announces his retirement

jan Cycling star and former Tour de France winner Jan Ullrich has said he is retiring.

German racing cyclist Jan Ullrich, 33, had won the Tour de France race in 1997 and finished runner-up on five occasions, however, his career ran into a major problem when he was banned on the eve of the 2006 Tour after his name had become linked with a doping scandal - a Spanish doping investigation known as 'Operation Puerto.'

Jan Ullrich had run into trouble over drugs before when he was dropped by Team Telekom in 2002 after testing positive for amphetamines. Jan Ullrich claimed that ecstasy he had taken at a club had been spiked with the drug.

Jan Ullrich has insisted he was innocent of the more recent allegations for which he has been under investigation since last summer.

"Today I'm ending my career as a professional cyclist," said Jan Ullrich and he added: "I never once cheated as a cyclist."
