Cyclist Ivan Basso quits Discovery Channel team
Cyclist Ivan Basso has terminated his contract with the Discovery Channel team after the probe into his involvement in the Spanish " Operation Puerto" doping scandal has been reopened.
Ivan Basso, 29, who will face an Italian Olympic Committee hearing on Wednesday on charges of having used or attempted to use a banned substance or method, cited personal reasons in his request to leave the team.
Ivan Basso was suspended by his team last week, although throughout the whole scandal he has vigorously denied any involvement in the doping.
Ivan Basso is reported to have said: "It is important that everyone knows this was 100% my decision. Nobody asked me to leave.
"The team is trying to find a new sponsor and win bike races, and my situation is a distraction to both of those goals."
Ivan Basso was one of 50 riders named in the Operation Puerto investigation, and because of this he was excluded from the Tour de France.
