Cyclist Dario Frigo sentenced on doping charge
Italian cyclist Dario Frigo has been given a six-month suspended
sentence and 12,000 Euro fine for doping during the 2001 Giro D'Italia.
Dario Frigo was forced to pull out of the 2001 Giro after Italian police found drugs in his hotel room.
Similar sentences were given to the riders Giuseppe Giuseppe Di Grande
and Alberto Elli after the duo was found guilty of using controlled
substances. Police raided the rooms of all teams following the San Remo
stage in 2001.
Trainer Primo Pregnolato also was handed an eight-month suspended
sentence and a 6,000 Euro fine and forbidden from participating in any
competition for the duration of the sentence. Primo Pregnolato was
working as the personal masseur of Marco Pantani in 2001.
Marco Pantani was the hero of Italian cycling after he won both the
Giro d'Italia and Tour de France in 1998, but he was banned from the
1999 Giro when he failed a blood test for haemocrit, an indicator of
performance-enhancing drugs.
A syringe containing insulin was found in his hotel room during the
raids on the 2001 Giro, and in February 2004 he was found dead in a
hotel room in Rimini after he had accidentally overdosed on cocaine.
Riders Domenico Romano and Ermanno Brignoli were given suspended
sentences of five months and 20 days and one month and 10 days
respectively after a deal with the court.
