Cyclist Alexandre Vinokourov retires
Racing cyclist Alexandre Vinokourov has decided to retire following the one-year suspension he received from Kazakhstan cycling federation for a doping offence.
Alexandre Vinokourov, 34, and his Astana cycling team were booted out of the 2007 Tour de France after he tested positive, and he was subsequently fired by Astana after his B sample confirmed the positive result of the test.
Alexandre Vinokourov is reported to have said: "I don't want this sport any more. I'm slamming the door and I'm leaving. I will prove I'm not guilty."
Alexandre Vinokourov added: "I want to restore my honour and get the results of this test rescinded."
Alexandre Vinokourov had come third in the 2003 Tour de France, claimed fifth position in 2005, and was favourite to win this year's race.
However, Alexandre Vinokourov crashed badly, which he made a comeback from to win a time trial and mountain stage, before he was found to have tested positive.
