Cyclist Alberto Contador will not be in Tour de France
Spanish cyclist Alberto Contador has lost his chance at defending his Tour de France title because his current Astana team have been omitted from the list of 20 official invitations for this year's race.
The Tour de France organisers decided against Luxembourg-based Astana because they had been named in the last year's doping scandals.
Another 17 ProTour teams will take part in this year's Tour de France, however, which will begin in Brest on 5 July.
Tour de France director Christian Prudhomme explained: "I want to make clear that this decision is aimed at the team not at Alberto Contador, but he happens to wear the Astana jersey."
But Astana's team spokesman Philippe Maertens was very disappointed by what has happened and he said: "Where is the logic? There are other teams who have doping records. Rabobank and Cofidis have faulted in last year's Tour."
