Belgian cyclist Tom Boonen wins Paris-Roubaix race
Belgian cyclist Tom Boonen has won his second Paris-Roubaix race on Sunday, when he defeated former champion Fabian Cancellara in a sprint finish.
Tom Boonen, who was the 2005 champion, was in control all the way through the race and his superior speed took him past Fabian Cancellara as they went into the final turn.
Tom Boonen said:"After such a long race and at that pace, you know anything can happen in a sprint, but when we reached the velodrome, I surged and it turned out I was the freshest."
Alessandro Ballan came in third place, and all three cyclists made the same time of 5 hours, 58 minutes, 42 seconds.
For Tom Boonen it was a return to past glories after a recent slump in his performance but he has remained confident in his abilities and said: "I never lost confidence."
The one-day Paris-Roubaix is one of the most difficult races in the world of cycling, and has 28 cobblestone sections covering 52.8km (32.74 miles) of the total 259.5km (160.9 miles) of road.
