Belgian cyclist Philippe Gilbert in overall lead of Dauphine Libere
Belgian Philippe Gilbert made an incredible solo ride and claimed stage two of the Dauphine Libere, which put him in the overall race lead.
Francaise des Jeux rider Philippe Gilbert took off from a break of three riders with 35 km to go on the stage from Bourgoin-Jallieu to Saint-Galmier.
French cyclist Samuel Dumoulin was in second place, five minutes behind with Austrian rider Peter Wrolich third to lead home the peloton.
German Fabian Wegmann came in second overall position with French rider Thomas Voeckler at third.
Philippe Gilbert, who won the highly respected Het Volk Classic in February, admitted he was surprised to have won.
"I never expected to pull off a stunt like that," said Philippe Gilbert, who started the break with Francaise des Jeux teammate Sebastian Joly of France and compatriot Cedric Vasseur after an hour's racing.
"I wanted to wait for Sebastian, then realised it was too dangerous. I've wanted a victory since Het Volk, and this is the first since then," Philippe Gilbert added.
