Winky Wright signs for superfight with Jermain Taylor
Boxer Winky Wright has signed at last for a superfight with the
undisputed middleweight champion Jermain Taylor on 17 June after months
of long and heated discussions.
Talks were abandoned after Winky Wright's request for a 50-50 split of
the purse was refused, but he has now backed down on this.
Jermain Taylor won his title from Bernard Hopkins in July 2005 and then beat him once again last December.
Winky Wright is a former light middleweight champion who was victorious
over Felix Trinidad in his first fight at 160lbs in May of last year.
Winky Wright sacked his promoter Gary Shaw last week because he failed to secure half of the purse.
However, Gary Shaw was hired again after Jermain Taylor threatened to
pull out of the fight altogether and it is believed that Winky Wright
has agreed on $3m (£1.7m) as opposed to Taylor's $4m (£2.3m).
Gary Shaw said that Las Vegas was the most likely location for the
fight, although Memphis, Tennessee and Atlanta have also been
suggested.
Gary Shaw has confirmed that he will be splitting from Winky Wright for good after the fight with Jermain Taylor is over.
