Welsh boxer Joe Calzaghe postpones fight with Roy Jones Jr
Welsh boxer Joe Calzaghe has had to postpone the planned September super-fight with Roy Jones Jr in New York because he has injured his hand.
The undefeated fighter from Newbridge hurt his right hand whilst training and there is no chance it will have recovered sufficiently in time for the bout.
Only last week it had been said that 36-year-old Calzaghe was to face American legend Jones Jr at New York's Madison Square Garden on 20 September.
And the fight was going to be the Welshman's first self-promoted bout since he parted company with long-term manager Frank Warren.
A new date for the clash has yet to be settled but Joe Calzaghe's father and trainer Enzo said he was confident it could still take place later this year.
Roy Jones Jr responded by email to the news saying: "I don't want him to be no less than his best so if this what it takes for that, then so be it."
And John Wirt, the chief executive of Jones Jr's promotional company Square Ring, has indicated that the fight could go ahead in November.
