Welsh boxer Joe Calzaghe gives up WBC super-middleweight belt
Welsh boxer Joe Calzaghe has decided to give up his WBC super-middleweight title so he is eligible to face Roy Jones Jr at light-heavyweight later this year.
The Newbridge fighter chose to relinquish the title rather than defend it against Carl Froch.
Joe Calzaghe still keeps his WBA and WBO belts and Carl Froch will take on Jermain Taylor for the other title later this year.
The date for the Calzaghe versus Jones fight is reported to be on 20 September.
Calzaghe is so far undefeated in 45 contests and the clash with Jones, which may be held in Las Vegas, would be his final fight he has said.
Joe Calzaghe is currently big box office draw in America after his points win victory against Bernard Hopkins in Las Vegas in April.
At the end of last month, Calzaghe parted company with long-term promoter Frank Warren and announced that he would manage himself until he retires.
