Veteran boxer Evander Holyfield faces Sultan Ibragimov
Veteran American boxer Evander Holyfield will face WBO heavyweight titleholder Sultan Ibragimov in October after the Russian fighter's scheduled opponent withdrew because of illness.
Sultan Ibragimov was lined up for a unification bout with Ruslan Chagaev of Uzbekistan, who currently is the WBA champion.
This means that Evander Holyfield, 44, gets the chance to become a five-time world champion and he said: "This is the first step on my quest to become the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world. I'm glad Sultan Ibragimov was willing to give me a shot."
Evander Holyfield is a former cruiserweight world champion who went up a weight, and he last fought for a world title when he was out-pointed by Chris Byrd in 2002.
If Evander Holyfield defeats Sultan Ibragimov, he will become the second oldest heavyweight champion in history. George Foreman is the oldest.
Sultan Ibragimov said: "Of course I am disappointed that Chagaev pulled out and won't allow me to unify our titles, but fighting a legend like Evander Holyfield is even better."
