Super-middleweight Joe Calzaghe's last fight in the division
WBO super-middleweight champion Joe Calzaghe says his world title
unification bout with IBF champion Jeff Lacy will be his final fight in
the division.
The 32-year-old Welshman, who has a 40-0 record and has defended his
crown 17 times, takes on Jeff Lacy, whose record is 21-0, in Manchester
on 4 March.
"I've been waiting eight years for a unification fight," said Joe Calzaghe, who plans to move up to light-heavyweight.
"This is the sort of opponent I've been waiting for."
Jeff Lacy has managed 17 of his 21 wins within the distance, but Joe
Calzaghe said the American would not have encountered anything like
what he could deliver.
"I have tremendous hand speed for a super-middleweight. He will not
have been in the ring with anybody as quick, or who will throw as many
punches as me."
The fight was originally scheduled for 5 November, but the
bout was postponed after southpaw Joe Calzaghe broke his left hand in
the fourth round of his points win over Evans Ashira in September.
Jeff Lacy says he expects a full-on slugfest when the pair finally go toe to toe.
"He's a come-forward fighter. I'm a come-forward fighter," he said. "We
both have punching power and that makes it out to be a great fight."
