Russian Sultan Ibragimov beat US boxer Shannon Briggs
Russian boxer Sultan Ibragimov has defeated American Shannon Briggs on a points victory to claim the World Boxing Organisation heavyweight title.
Shannon Briggs, who was making his first defence of the title, was the taller man of the two opponents but it was Sultan Ibragimov who won by a unanimous decision on the fight in Atlantic City. The judges awarded 119-109, 117-111 and 115-113 as points in favour of Sultan Ibragimov as winner.
Sultan Ibragimov said: "Shannon Briggs is a very tough guy and I respect him but tomorrow I will wake up a champion."
The fight had been originally due to have taken place in March in New York but had to be postponed after Shannon Briggs, 35, was diagnosed with pneumonia.
Shannon Briggs wasn't at his best and he knew it saying: "I have been taking all kinds of antibiotics. I couldn't train for the last two weeks.
"I really didn't want to fight, but if I pulled out they threatened to sue me and they would have stripped me (of the title)."
