Naseem Hamed jailed for dangerous driving
Former world boxing champion Naseem Hamed has just been jailed for dangerous driving following a crash, which left another motorist with severely injuries.
Sheffield boxing star Naseem Hamed, 32, was sentenced to 15 months at Sheffield Crown Court after pleading guilty at an earlier hearing and he was also banned from driving for a period of four years.
Naseem Hamed was driving his £325,000 McLaren-Mercedes when he crashed at 90mph on Ringinglow Road, Sheffield.
Driver Anthony Burgin, 38, spent weeks in hospital after he was left with fractures to "every major bone in his body".
The court was told how Naseem Hamed wanted to impress businessman Asif Ayub, 46, who was in the McLaren-Mercedes at the time of the crash.
Naseem Hamed was showing off what his car could do when he crossed a solid white line at a speed of at least 90mph and went headlong into a Volkswagen Golf.
The Volkswagen Golf, driven by Mr Burgin, was pushed backwards by the force of the crash and then Naseem Hamed's car hit a second vehicle, which he had been trying to overtake.
Michael Wood the driver of the second car described Hamed's overtaking manoeuvre in court as "stupid, suicide, ridiculous".
Sentencing Naseem Hamed on Friday, the Recorder of Sheffield, Judge Alan Goldsack said the only possible sentence was custodial imprisonment.
Naseem Hamed's solicitor, Steve Smith, said he was "very disappointed" with the result and said he did not think Hamed's celebrity status had been an advantage in the case.
