Former boxer Mike Tyson jailed for a day
Former-boxing heavyweight champion Mike Tyson has been ordered to spend 24 hours in jail and to perform 360 hours of community service for possession of illegal drugs and driving under the influence.
Mike Tyson, 41, was also given three years' probation after he was caught driving whilst in possession of cocaine, and having also used marijuana.
The prosecution recommended one year of imprisonment because they pointed out that Mike Tyson was a multiple offender, however, the Arizona judge was impressed by the fact that Mike Tyson had sought help for his drug addiction.
Mike Tyson had been seen by police to be driving erratically after he had come out of a nightclub in Scottsdale, Arizona, in December 2006, and after stopping and searching him they found three bags of cocaine. Mike Tyson also later admitted to having used marijuana that day along with an anti-depressant drug.
At the plea hearing in September, Mike Tyson's lawyer said that his client had sought rehabilitation treatment and had been clean of drugs for months, and his former wives also wrote letters to the court calling for a reduced sentence.
