Fidel Castro threatens to pull Cuba out of boxing in the US
Cuban President Fidel Castro has threatened to stop the Cuban boxing team from taking part the world championship in America to prevent boxers from defecting, which recently happened in Brazil.
President Castro, 80, is reported in the Granma newspaper to have said that Cuba would not sacrifice its honour for Olympic gold medals. The world championship held in Chicago, is a qualifier for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Last month, Guillermo Rigondeaux and Erislandy Lara, both Cuban fighters, abandoned their team at an event in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil and they were deported from Brazil to Cuba on Monday.
Cuban sports officials were looking into all possible ways to stop defections, Fidel Castro said, including sending an alternative team to America in October, or even not sending any boxers at all.
President Castro wrote in a statement: "The morale and patriotism of athletes shall prevail above all else."
