English featherweight Stephen Smith aims for gold at Commonwealth Games
English featherweight boxer Stephen Smith got into the Commonwealth
Games boxing quarter-finals and is aiming on winning the gold medal.
Stephen Smith, 20, beat Ghana's Samuel Neequaye in the third round and gained victory on the outclassed rule.
Stephen Smith said: "I would love to take home the gold for the bragging rights."
And Stephen Smith's teammate, bantamweight Nick Macdonald, lost 19-11 to South African Bongani Mahlangu.
Nick Macdonald, whose Games preparation was spoiled by illness, led by
one point after the first round but he became slower as his rival
pulled away.
"I've had flu and a chest infection so I haven't been able to have any fights for three months," Nick Macdonald said.
"But I didn't perform as well as I should have done," Nick Macdonald added.
And Welsh boxer Darren Edwards secured a fourth quarterfinal place for
his country with an impressive 33-22 points win over Botswana's Thato
Batshegi.
