Boxing promoter Frank Warren calls Danny Williams "unprofessional" after no-show

mattskeltonPromoter Frank Warren, at a pre-fight news conference, described boxing champ Danny Williams as "unprofessional" after another no-show.

Commonwealth heavyweight champion Danny Williams walked out of a planned head-to-head with Matt Skelton before Saturday's London's ExCel arena date.

Trainer Jim McDonnell said Danny Williams had gone to pray at his mosque after Matt Skelton had been delayed by traffic.

Frank Warren said: "For Danny to storm off is very unprofessional, and I shall be having words with him about it."

Danny Williams also refused to take part in a news conference before his meeting with Audley Harrison last December.

After being criticised by promoter Frank Warren for arriving late, an apologetic Matt Skelton said he wasn't seeking a psychological edge.

Matt Skelton said: "He obviously thought I did it deliberately to mess him around, but that's not my game.

"I don't think it's a sign of his mental state. I respect his religion if he's gone to pray.

"I've also got a lot of respect for Danny and I don't think it's in either of our make-up to bad-mouth each other."

Matt Skelton's British title will not be up for grabs in Saturday's fight, although the British Boxing Board of Control will declare the domestic title vacant if he is beaten by Danny Williams.

Bedford-based Matt Skelton would not put his title on the line in a voluntary defence of the title.

When the fight with Matt Skelton was agreed, Danny Williams was suspended by the BBBC from fighting for the British title after a late withdrawal from the original date in July of last year.

Danny Williams claimed sickness as his reason for not taking part, and although the ban was lifted in January Matt Skelton must fight a mandatory challenge to take outright ownership of a Lonsdale belt.

Matt Skelton said: "When we initially sat down the only belt in question was the Commonwealth. None of my British title defences have been mandatory and the Board don't see fit to award me the belt to keep."
