Boxers Jhonny Gonzalez and Daniel Ponce de Leon retain titles
Mexican boxer Jhonny Gonzalez retained his WBO bantamweight title with a split-decision win over fellow countryman Fernando Montiel in Carson, California.
After an unimpressive fight, Jhonny Gonzalez won the decision and took his record to 33 wins against four losses.
Also on the card, Daniel Ponce de Leon beat Gerson Guerrero and retained his WBO super bantamweight title, when Guerrero, a replacement for Alejandro Barrera, was knocked out in the second round.
Gerson Guerrero, moving up two weights from his usual bantamweight, became quickly in trouble against the other Mexican boxer and hit the floor before Daniel Ponce De Leon finished him off one minute, 50 seconds into the second round with a five-punch combination.
In the meantime, Jhonny Gonzalez was left confused after he had beaten Fernando Montiel, when judge Marty Denkin scored the bout 115-113 against him.
However, judges Chuck Hassett and Nelson Vasquez scored the fight 116-112 and 118-111 in Jhonny Gonzalez's favour and he said: "I didn't see anything that I did to lose. I don't know what that judge saw."
