Boxer Tony Oakey beats Steve Spartacus in London
Boxer Tony Oakey is now Britain's new light heavyweight champion after he defeated Steve Spartacus with a stoppage in the final round of their fight in London.
Tony Oakey, 31, was in control all through the 12-round fight against Steve Spartacus at the ExCel Arena and looked certain of a landslide points win but so intense was the battering he was giving his opponent in the final round that referee Richie Davies stopped it after just 34 seconds. Steve Spartacus had never been stopped in a fight before.
The British Boxing Board of Control had matched Portsmouth's Tony Oakey and Ipswich fighter Steve Spartacus for the vacant title after stripping former champion Peter Oboh of his belt for failing to fight against Tony Oakey at Wembley Arena last month.
Veteran boxer Peter Oboh, who hadn't been in the ring for three years, refused to fight less than an hour before the scheduled start of the bout, so the board swiftly agreed on the fight between Tony Oakey and Steve Spartacus, who was already booked to appear on the bill.
Tony Oakey said: "I was gutted for myself and my fans who had travelled from Portsmouth for the Oboh fight."
