Boxer Ricky Hatton may give up his welterweight crown
Boxer Ricky Hatton's camp have hinted that he could give up his WBA welterweight crown instead of going in for a low-profile fight in America on 9 December and a prospective fight against Arturo Gatti is not an option after he lost his WBC title to Carlos Baldomir.
Ricky Hatton may drop to light-welterweight, which would mean he relinquishes his title.
"We are not averse to giving up belts rather than being pushed into mandatory fights few people want to see," said Ricky Hatton's father, Ray Hatton.
"It is lovely and a great honour to have the belts but these days in the modern era of boxing it is big fights that the fans and the television companies want to see."
Ricky Hatton's camp are considering possible opponents for his next fight and welterweight Oktay Urkal is a leading contender but that is not likely to go down well in America so he may consider going back to his previous weight division.
"Ricky will be fighting in a great American city in December," said Ray Hatton.
