Boxer Ricky Hatton gives up IBF light-welterweight title
Boxer Ricky Hatton has confirmed that he will be surrendering his IBF light-welterweight title so that he can advance up a division to face American fighter Luis Collazo on 13 May.
Ricky Hatton, 27, has turned down a fight with the IBF challenger Naoufel Ben Rabah to make a bid for the WBA welterweight title.
Ricky Hatton had won the IBF title by beating Kostya Tszyu last summer.
"Winning the IBF title was the greatest night of my life. To give it up outside the ring is truly painful," Ricky Hatton said.
"It has never been my or my team's intention not to defend my title against the IBF's appointed challenger but sadly due to outside influences, legal problems and problems meeting TV schedules, it seems that this is the situation I find myself in," Ricky Hatton added.
Ricky Hatton had said earlier this week that he hoped that a win over Luis Collazo in Boston in May would open the door to even bigger fights at 147lb.
"After that fight there should be a few more big-name bouts for me," Ricky Hatton told The Sun newspaper.
