Boxer Johnny Nelson forced to retire
Boxer Johnny Nelson has been forced to retire because of knee and back problems.
Johnny Nelson, 39, withdrew from next month's WBO cruiserweight title fight with Enzo Maccarinelli and then announced his retirement.
"I've decided to say that's it, I'll call it a day," said Johnny Nelson.
Doctors had advised Johnny Nelson after knee operations in March never to box again but he had managed to return to training after the surgery. Unfortunately he was then struck by a persistent back problem, which has forced him to permanently leave the boxing ring.
"The injuries that I have acquired through training for fights over the past years just will not let me step up to the next level in preparation for my next fight," Johnny Nelson said.
"In the mornings when I get up, boxing is no longer the first thing I think about. I think about the injuries," Johnny Nelson explained.
Johnny Nelson has given up his WBO belt, which will pass to Enzo Maccarinelli subject to the governing body's approval.
