Boxer Joe Calzaghe calls Jeff Lacy ‘pathetic'
Boxer Joe Calzaghe ridiculed super middleweight American opponent Jeff
Lacy after he wore an England football shirt at Thursday's press
conference.
Welshman Joe Calzaghe said Jeff Lacy's attempts to impress some fans
ahead of Sunday's WBO-IBF unification fight in Manchester were
"pathetic".
However, Jeff Lacy's promoter Gary Shaw said: "When we go into the ring we are going to be defending English people.
"All you ever hear from Joe Calzaghe is about Italy and Wales."
Gary Shaw even waved a St George's English flag as the two boxers
squared up to each other, and predicted his fighter would win very many
fans in Manchester.
The promoter said: "We expect over 19,000 people to be booing us when
we get up into that ring, but when we leave the ring after the fight
those same 19,000 will be cheering Jeff Lacy."
Unbeaten IBF title-holder Jeff Lacy let Gary Shaw do most of the
talking on Thursday, but he had something to say when pressed about his
previous derogatory comments that WBO champion Joe Calzaghe slapped
rather than punched.
"I never said Joe Calzaghe slapped," claimed the 28-year-old boxer. "I
respect what he has done and I see myself as the underdog. But I am
just focused and ready for the fight."
In spite of the 0200 GMT start on Sunday morning on account of
accommodating American television, the MEN Arena has increased its
usual 16,000-crowd capacity for the event.
