Boxer James Toney banned for steroids
Boxing champion James Toney has tested positive for steroids and has received a ban for a year from the state of California Athletic Commission.
The state of California Athletic Commission issued the suspension against James Toney, 38, pending an appeal, because he tested positive after defeating Danny Batchelder in May.
This is not the first time that James Toney has been in trouble for doping because he also tested positive for nandrolone two years ago and it cost him a win against then WBC heavyweight champion John Ruiz.
California Athletic Commission chief Armando Garcia says that James Toney has the right of appeal, as does Danny Batchelder who also tested positive.
"My recommendation is suspension until the end of the licensing year and a $2,500 (£1,267) fine for both.
"We will give them the 30 days to appeal. If they don't, that's what the suspension will be."
James Toney won a split decision over Danny Batchelder, a result that will not be changed, Armando Garcia also said.
