Boxer Bernard Hopkins beat Antonio Tarver and moves up 2 weights
Boxer Bernard Hopkins put on a very impressive performance as a fighter when he beat Antonio Tarver in a one-sided light heavyweight bout in Atlantic City.
Bernard Hopkins, 41, a former middleweight world champion, moved up two weights by a unanimous decision when all three judges scored the fringe IBO title bout 118-109 for Hopkins.
"I could have moved up to this weight five years ago and I've always been good against southpaws," said Bernard Hopkins, who may now continue boxing.
Bernard Hopkins, who enjoyed a 10-year reign as world middleweight champion, dominated the fight against defending champion Antonio Tarver from the start.
Bernard Hopkins's lightening-quick combinations kept his taller rival at bay and the younger 37-year-old Antonio Tarver was forced to touch down for a standing eight count after a straight right in the fifth.
"Tarver has a good punch, I could see why he knocked Roy Jones out, but I didn't give him a clean target," said Bernard Hopkins.
A subdued Antonio Tarver, who is going to appear in the forthcoming Rocky VI, could not find a way to make a comeback against Bernard Hopkins and spent a lot of the time pinned back against the ropes.
"It wasn't my night," Antonio Tarver said. "You have days like this. There are no excuses. I give all praises to Bernard Hopkins."
