American boxer Bernard Hopkins intends to better Sugar Ray Robinson
American boxer Bernard Hopkins wants to go one better than legendary fellow middleweight Sugar Ray Robinson by moving up to win a world light heavyweight crown.
Bernard Hopkins, 41, is fighting Antonio Tarver for the IBO crown in Atlantic City on Saturday and is sure he can succeed where Sugar Ray Robinson failed back in 1952.
Bernard Hopkins said: "My great motivator is Sugar Ray but I want to accomplish something for the Bernard Hopkins era.
"I fight for a place in history and I have always fought for that."
And he added, "My legacy is already cemented. My legacy was in the middleweight division and that book is now closed."
The former undisputed champion at 160lbs lost his belts to compatriot boxer Jermain Taylor last July and was then out pointed in a rematch in December.
Bernard Hopkins insists whatever happens in Atlantic City it will be his last fight.
"You must enjoy me now because when I'm gone you might not see it again," said Bernard Hopkins, whose record stands at 46-4 with one drawn and 32 knockouts.
