US sprinting champion Maurice Greene to retire
American sprinter and former Olympic and world 100m champion Maurice Greene has decided to retire from sport and says that problems with injuries are his main reason.
Maurice Greene, 33, has suffered many setbacks in his career over the last two years due to injuries and now he is opting for a future in coaching and in the business sector.
Maurice Greene is reported to have said: "It's a little sad for me but I've had a great career. Because of my injuries, it's better to call it quits."
Maurice Greene had been thought likely to be a contestant in the 100m, 200m and 4x100m races at this year's summer Olympics in Beijing but now this will not be happening.
Maurice Greene explained: "I don't think I can have that mental battle with myself coming back from injury any more. It takes a lot out of you mentally ... you start getting down and then you get depressed. This is Olympic year, something I wanted to do so bad. So I just decided to call it quits ... I want other people in the sport to shine."
