Sprinter Asafa Powell breaks record at IAAF Grand Prix
Jamaican sprinter Asafa Powell has broken the world 100m record when he clocked 9.74 secs at the IAAF Grand Prix in Rieti, Italy.
Asafa Powell set the new record in the second of two heats at the event, which was run despite a strong following wind that was within the athletics' governing body the IAAF's guidelines.
Asafa Powell said proudly: "That's what happens when I start to listen to the coach,"
"It's just to remind my fans that Asafa Powell is still here. I came here and executed properly and did what I was supposed to do.
"I love this track - it's very bouncy. Italy is a good place for me. It's my second home."
Asafa Powell, who has recently suffered a groin and knee injuries, first set the previous record of 9.77 in Athens in June 2005 and then in 2006 he equalled it twice in Gateshead and Zurich.
