Scottishathletics' Allan Wells, Liz McColgan and Tommy Boyle shape its future
Scottishathletics' heroes, like Allan Wells, Liz McColgan and coach Tommy Boyle from a more successful past, are to spearhead its go-it-alone strategy for nurturing the nation's new talent for the future.
Scottishathletics this year has decided to pull out from the core group of sports, which are overseen by the Scottish Institute of Sport.
Allan Wells, Liz McColgan and coach Tommy Boyle will be leading specialist squads in sprint, long and middle-distance and Olympic 100m gold medalist Wells commented: "I am entering into this with a real sense of excitement."
Scottishathletics' plan is to build on the specialist squad idea introduced by Liz McColgan last year.
The Olympic 10,000m silver medalist had set up an endurance squad for young female athletes.
Liz McColgan said: "I'm really looking forward to expanding the group to include young male distance runners and building on the success of the first year's program and developing a particular emphasis on distance running."
Tommy Boyle has coached British internationals Tom McKean, Yvonne Murray and, in the recent past, Susan Scott.
