Runners Zersenay Tadesse and Boniface Kiprop aim to set new record
Runners Zersenay Tadesse and Boniface Kiprop are hoping to beat the fastest 10km time ever run on British roads at the Bupa Great Manchester Run on Sunday.
Zersenay Tadesse, from Eritrea, the Olympic 10,000m bronze medallist, and Ugandan Boniface Kiprop are aiming to go faster than Haile Gebrselassie's mark of 27 minutes 25 seconds.
Zersenay Tadesse said: "Trying to beat Haile's record was one of my thoughts - I just hope the weather is good.
Boniface Kiprop said: "Even if the weather is poor, I'm sure it'll be a fast time."
Australian Benita Johnson, 27, thinks that the duo Berhane Adere and Gete Wami from Ethiopia should be favourites in the women's event.
However, the former world cross country champion said: "I never go into a race thinking they have an advantage because they are from Africa.
"It's going to be a hard race to beat them and of course the others - this is the best strength-in-depth field of the year anywhere.
"But I know it is possible and I firmly believe I am in my best shape for a long, long time."
Chris Davies, who ran the fastest 10km time by a British runner last May at the same venue, is expected to be the best at the men's challenge, with Commonwealth marathon bronze medallist Liz Yelling is expected to win in the women's event.
