Olympic javelin champion Jan Zelezny retires earlier
Three-time Olympic javelin champion Czech Jan Zelezny has pulled out from his last event because of an Achilles injury and in so doing has retired from sport earlier than planned.
Jan Zelezny, 40, had expected to make this weekend's Yokohama meeting his final appearance before he retired but he has now decided not to travel to Japan, saying it would be "too hard" for his body to cope with at present.
Jan Zelezny, who was also world champion in 1993, 1995 and 2001, and who had set five world records, will be working for the IOC and as a coach in Prague in future.
Jan Zelezny has been struggling with a chronic Achilles problem over recent seasons and it kept him away from last year's World Championships.
Jan Zelezny won Olympic gold medals in Barcelona, Atlanta and Sydney and he still holds the world best of 98.48m as well as having won bronze at the European Championships in Gothenburg earlier this year.
