Olympic champion Justin Gatlin must serve four years ban for drugs IAAF says
Olympic 100m champion Justin Gatlin has to serve a minimum drugs ban of four years, according to the world governing body the IAAF.
On Tuesday Justin Gatlin made a deal with the American authorities for up to eight years out instead of a life ban by saying he agrees to help the battle against doping.
The IAAF, which can challenge the American ban, would accept eight years or less but says "four years would be the minimum".
"We want to see if it leads to other convictions," said a spokesman for the IAAF.
Justin Gatlin received the suspension on Tuesday after he tested positive for the hormone testosterone.
An eight-year suspension would have effectively finished his athletics career, but it will still be difficult to make a comeback to top-level athletics after four years away.
Justin Gatlin had first failed a drugs test in 2001 when amphetamines were discovered in his samples at the USA Junior Championships, however, it was then accepted that medication he had been taking for 10 years to control attention-deficit disorder was the reason for the failed test.
