New Zealand's triathlon champion Hamish Carter to retire
Auckland-born reigning Olympic triathlon champion Hamish Carter has announced his retirement from athletics.
Hamish Carter, 35, is a New Zealand triathlete, who took part in the triathlon at the 2000 Summer Olympics finishing in 26th place, and who also won 12 World Cup races and world championship silver in 2006 during an impressive career in sport for 14 years.
Hamish Carter won the triathlon gold at the 2004 Summer Olympics, defeating his good friend, rival and New Zealander compatriot, Bevan Docherty who had the silver.
Although he has had a lot of victories and much to be proud about, Hamish Carter thinks that winning gold actually had spoiled his feelings towards being a competitive athlete.
"Winning an Olympic gold medal spoils you as an athlete because when you win the race, after that everything is so pale in comparison," explained Hamish Carter, and he added:
"I won a World Cup race last year and when I came across the line I didn't really feel much."
