Marathon winner Paul Tergat withdraws from Great North Run
Marathon world record-holder, the Kenyan runner Paul Tergat, has withdrawn from Sunday's Great North Run in Newcastle.
Paul Tergat, 37, a former winner of the race, explained to the race organisers that his training performances had been disappointing and Matthew Turnbull, the Great North Run's elite athletes director, said: "We respect Paul's wishes for not wanting to race when not fully prepared."
Matthew Turnbull added that the search was now on for a top-quality replacement who would be willing to race at short notice.
Paul Tergat's decision comes amongst rumour that the New York Marathon title holder is going to retire and speaking at an athletes' workshop in Nairobi last week, Tergat said: "They say life begins at 40, but in athletics, that is when life ends.
"I am approaching (that age) and may soon be out of action."
Before he pulled out, Paul Tergat was scheduled to face the current Olympic and world marathon champions Stefano Baldini of Italy and Jaouad Gharib from Morocco.
