Long jumper Jade Johnson has surgery ahead of European Championships bid
Long jumper Jade Johnson has had minor surgery ahead of her bid to secure a place at next month's European Championships in Gothenburg.
Jade Johnson, 26, had been suffering from a kidney problem, which worsened over the past three days and left her struggling for form.
"I have seen several specialists who have all agreed that a small operation is needed," Jade Johnson said.
Jade Johnson is hoping to recover in time to compete in the London Grand Prix on 28 July.
Jade Johnson added: "I look forward to getting back into competitive action as soon as possible.
"I still hope to compete at the Norwich Union London Grand Prix and, subject to selection, the European Championships in Gothenburg."
Although Jade Johnson has got the necessary 6.50m distance demanded by the European Athletics Association, she is still 2cm short of the UK Athletics elite standard of 6.65.
Jade Johnson finished second to Kelly Sotherton at last weekend's European trials but wasn't included in the first wave of selections for the Great Britain side for Gothenburg named on Tuesday.
Dave Collins, UK Athletics performance director commented, "Things don't seem to be working well for her and she has still to make the elite standard."
